Have you ever wondered about veneers and how they work to transform your smile’s appearance? Dr. Kelsi Lewis and our team from Glow Dental Co. in Austin, Texas would like to share more about this treatment. Veneers are ultra-thin, porcelain coverings custom-crafted for your teeth. They’re designed to conceal minor tooth flaws you find displeasing to make your smile more appealing. Teeth that are chipped, gapped, stained, misshapen or slightly crooked can be fitted with porcelain veneers to give your smile a flawless appearance.
Here are the steps to achieving a perfect smile with veneers:
Our veneer treatments start with a consultation to evaluate your smile, inspect your oral health and assess the “trouble spots” you’d like to correct. This enables us to determine if veneers are your best option for achieving your perfect smile. If so, we’ll proceed with your treatment.
The next step is planning your treatment. Veneers work best on your front teeth, those that are highly visible when you smile. The number of veneers you’ll need will depend on the state of your “smile teeth” and the results you want to achieve. Together, we’ll map out a treatment plan you’re comfortable with that best achieves your smile goals.
Veneers are placed on existing teeth after prepping them for treatment. To prep your teeth, Dr. Lewis will shave off a thin layer of tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. If you have sensitive teeth, we can give you a mild anesthetic for this phase of your treatment.
Once your teeth are prepped, we’ll take digital scans of your mouth to send to a lab where custom veneers are fabricated. The scans will act like a blueprint for creating restorations that look and feel like your real teeth. Each veneer is custom-crafted for a natural appearance and precise fit. As this process can take several weeks, we’ll cover your prepped teeth with temporary veneers to avoid sensitivity during this interim period.
When your porcelain veneers are ready, Dr. Lewis will schedule a second appointment to bond them to your teeth. We’ll place the veneers one by one over your teeth to ensure a perfect fit. Then we’ll secure them in place permanently, giving your pearly whites a stunning, new appearance.
Veneer aftercare consists mainly of good brushing and flossing habits and follow-up visits twice annually for routine checkups and cleanings. To protect your veneers from premature wear, don’t eat hard candy or other hard foods, and stop bad habits of crunching on ice and using your teeth as tools. With proper care, your smile can retain its gorgeous appearance for 15+ years.
